Quick answer
For safe, long-term storage of 6x6cm mounted slides or unmounted transparencies, the Clearfile 23B Slide Pages offer archival-quality polypropylene protection. They hold twelve 6x6cm mounts per page and are a practical choice for medium format photographers.
Why archival pages matter for medium format slides
Medium format slides, especially 6x6cm, are larger and more delicate than 35mm. Storing them in non-archival sleeves can lead to scratches, dust buildup, or chemical damage over time. Archival pages like the Clearfile 23B are made from inert polypropylene, which won't emit harmful gases or react with the emulsion.
Trade-offs: page capacity vs. protection
The Clearfile 23B holds twelve mounted slides per page, which is efficient for binder storage. However, if you frequently access individual slides, the fixed pockets may be less convenient than pages with individual sleeves. Also, for unmounted 6x6cm or 6x4.5cm film, the page works but you must ensure the film lies flat to avoid scratches.
Decision rules for 6x6cm slide pages
- Page capacity: If you store many mounted 6x6cm slides, the Clearfile 23B holds 12 per page, saving binder space. For unmounted film, it also fits 6x4.5cm strips. Count your slides to estimate how many pages you need.
- Archival material: Choose polypropylene (like Clearfile) over PVC or unknown plastics. Polypropylene is chemically stable and won't cause fading or sticking over decades.
- Handling frequency: If you often remove slides for scanning or projection, consider pages with individual sleeves or top-loading pockets. The Clearfile 23B uses side-loading pockets, which are secure but require careful removal. Test one page with your slides to ensure easy access.
