Learn the correct way to clean a camera lens without scratching it. We recommend a two-step method using a blower, a spray, and a microfibre cloth.

Quick answer

Start with a blower to remove loose dust, then apply a small amount of lens cleaner spray to a microfibre cloth and wipe in gentle circles. Never spray directly onto the lens.

Why cleaning technique matters

Camera lenses have delicate multi-layer coatings that scratch easily. Using the wrong method—like a dry cloth or household glass cleaner—can cause permanent damage. The goal is to remove dirt without grinding particles into the glass.

When to skip cleaning

A few specks of dust rarely affect image quality. Only clean when you see visible smudges, fingerprints, or grime. Over-cleaning increases the risk of wear.

Safe cleaning steps

  1. Remove loose dust: Use a blower or soft brush to blow away grit from the lens surface. Do not use canned air, which can spit liquid propellant. Skipping this step can scratch the coating when you wipe.
  2. Apply cleaner to the cloth: Spray one or two puffs of lens cleaner onto a clean microfibre cloth. Never spray directly onto the lens—liquid can seep into the barrel. A damp cloth is safer than a wet lens.
  3. Wipe in a spiral motion: Start at the center and move outward in a gentle spiral. Turn the cloth to a fresh area after each pass. Use light pressure. Reusing a dirty spot redeposits oils and grit.
  4. Inspect and repeat if needed: Hold the lens under a bright light to check for streaks or residue. If any remain, repeat step 2 with a fresh cloth area. Two light passes are better than one hard scrub.
