Category: Film & Film Processing Film Processing Chemicals

Part of our Eco Range of developing chemicals, that we specially created for safer use in schools and colleges, this universal darkroom film developer is ascorbic acid based, hydroquinone free and features easy-mixing. It combines fine grain and full use of film speed and produces very sharp negatives enhancing shadow contrast and improving highlights detail.

It's suitable for developing most black and white films and the times for development can be found in our info section https://www.firstcall-photographic.co.uk/userfiles/file/film_dev_timing_chart_2019a.pdf

It produces fine grain and sharpness, is mildly compensating and produces good results on highlights.
In using it we found it worked in a very similar way to Kodak's Xtol bith in development time and results.

The concentrate dilutes 1 + 1 for reuseable solutions or 1 + 3 with water for one-shot (disposable) use.

Please note that Eco developers may be delivered as red/orange or yellow in colour.

The reason for this depends on two factors:

 1) Exposition to the light of products with ascorbic acid/dimezone is yellow at first when it is just mixed and bottled. Afterwards, it can become orange/red, but it does not affect the efficiency of the product (you might also find this on Neutol chemicals, for example, or with Bellini Eco Paper and Xtol Kodak once dissolved)

 2) Dimezone S presence of coloured molecules inside the product can sometimes appear in powder from white to deep orange. Alternatively, it can change the deep orange one to become like a red wine colour once dissolved.

This colour change doesn't affect the developer's efficiency or performance.

Evelyn ★★★★★

Was a bit skeptical about an ascorbic acid developer, but the results on my Tri-X came out perfectly crisp with no visible fog. The 1L bottle has lasted me through a good number of sessions, and knowing it's safe for classroom use made me feel way better about pouring it down the sink afterward.

Ella L. ★★★★★

The fact that it’s hydroquinone-free made it easy to justify using in our school darkroom, and the 1L size has lasted through a surprising number of student film sessions. I’ve mixed it three times now and it worked consistently with both Tri-X and Fomapan without any issues.

Eva ★★★★★

The lack of hydroquinone and the ascorbic acid base were the deciding factors for me, since I teach a community darkroom class and want to keep fumes down. It developed a roll of Tri-X to a clean, printable negative with no weird fog, and cleanup was a breeze.
