BER49 is a brilliant fine grain powder developer from Bergger. Being a powder, it has all the advantages of ID11 or Microphen plus a lot more.

Unusually, it is a three part powder developer that is very efficient for the development of black and white negatives giving very fine details in half-tones. The working solution has a long shelf life, and is very resistant to oxidation.

Suitable for machine or manual processing, one litre is capable of processing 10 films. But starting from the third film, developing time has to be increased by one minute, for each film.

Typically, a roll of FP4 or HP5 takes around 12 minutes to process using the 1+1 dilution.

The three-part powder mixes up cleanly with no lumps, and I've been blown away by the fine grain it gives my 35mm shots—sharp but smooth, just like I hoped. It's become my go-to for slower films, and the 1L batch stretches further than the liquid stuff I used before.

Mixed up three packages of this at 1+1 and at 68°F for 7 minutes, and the negatives came out with noticeably cleaner highlights than with my usual D-76. The three-part powder system was straightforward to dissolve, but I wish the instructions were a bit clearer on water temperature. Still, for fine

Finally, a powder developer that doesn't clump or leave residue when mixing—the three-part sachets dissolve cleanly in about five minutes of stirring. I've used it for both 35mm and 120 rolls and the grain stays tight even when I push a stop. This one's earned a permanent spot on my shelf.
