We all know that in modern-day Britain it can be difficult to accommodate a darkroom at home, and even in educational establishments there might not be the will or expertise to set up a darkroom from scratch. But that's no reason not to explore the fascinating world of analogue in a contemporary way.

Printing-out paper or Sunprints are based on the old process of cyanotype printing. Distinctive for producing Prussian blue monochromatic prints, cyanotype photographs are made by placing objects such as leaves, shells, flowers, or textured patterns onto the surface and exposing them for a few minutes in sunlight onto a sheet of our paper. The paper is then rinsed with water for 30 seconds to reveal the print.

The result is an image formed by light and objects. The objects block light from the paper, creating white shapes. Areas not blocked—exposed to light completely—are blue/cyan. We thoroughly recommend this process for art and nature projects within schools. Developed in the mid-19th century, cyanotype was quickly embraced as an inexpensive method for reproducing photographs, documents, maps, and plans (hence the enduring architectural term “blueprint”).

Jacquard’s Cyanotype Class Pack brings the magic of sun-printing to any classroom! Cyanotype is by far the easiest and most magical sun-printing process there is, and with Jacquard’s Cyanotype Class Pack, students can experience the full breadth of cyanotype’s potential in a single lesson. The pack comes with everything needed to make prints from objects (“photograms”), drawings, or photographs—all you need is a sunny day!

The cyanotype process ties in well to art, science, photography, chemistry, and nature lessons/curriculums. A great group activity, fun and safe for kids 8+!

Scarlett ★★★★★

Got a class of 28 all successfully printing their first cyanotypes within an hour—the pre-coated paper and simple instructions made it dead easy. Even the kids who usually hate waiting were glued to the sun exposure step.

Ava O. ★★★★★

I was worried about teaching cyanotype without a darkroom, but this pack's pre-coated paper made it so straightforward for my class of 28. The prints came out beautifully after just a few minutes in the sun, and the instructions were clear enough for total beginners.

William ★★★★★

This class pack is perfectly sized for my after-school photography club of 22 students — the very detailed instructions made it easy even for complete beginners. We got beautiful, rich blue prints on our first try.
