Rockland Tintype Replacement Plates - 8 x 10in Pack of 10

Rockland Tintype Replacement Plates are satin black aluminium plates prepared and ready for coating, giving you a convenient starting point for creating your own tintype photographs. This pack contains ten 8 × 10in plates, with a thinner construction that improves adhesion and makes them easier to cut down to alternative sizes when required.

Why We Like It

Tintype is one of those historic photographic processes that is just as fascinating to work with today as it was in the 19th century. Introduced in the 1800s, it helped make portrait photography accessible to a much wider audience because images could be produced relatively quickly and inexpensively on a durable metal support. The resulting photographs have a wonderfully distinctive appearance that is difficult to reproduce convincingly by any other method.

These Rockland plates take some of the preparation out of the process. Rather than sourcing and preparing suitable metal yourself, you have a consistent satin black aluminium surface ready for coating. The black background is important to the characteristic tintype appearance, allowing the lighter areas of the photographic image to stand out against the dark plate.

The newer, thinner plates are also particularly useful if you like experimenting with different formats. They can be trimmed with scissors, so you are not restricted to making 8 × 10in images. You can cut a plate down for smaller cameras, alternative plate holders or creative projects, while wasting as little material as possible.

Claire O. ★★★★★

I've been getting perfect tintypes on these 8x10 plates right out of the box, and the satin black surface takes emulsion evenly without any prep work needed. The pack of ten is a solid value for someone who shoots wet plate regularly.

Edward ★★★★★

The satin black finish on these plates takes emulsion beautifully, giving my tintypes a rich depth I struggled to get with homemade alternatives. Each of the ten plates in the pack was perfectly clean and ready to coat right out of the box.

Carter U. ★★★★★

Finally got around to trying the 8x10 plates and the aluminum surface took the collodion perfectly without any prep work. The pack of 10 is a decent value for the price, especially since I don't have to cut or sand them myself. Saved me a ton of hassle compared to my old method.
