Filmomat PhotoPlug Shutter-Speed Tester

The Filmomat PhotoPlug is a compact optical shutter-speed tester for analogue cameras. Used with the free Shutter-Speed app, it turns your smartphone into a simple tool for checking whether your camera’s shutter speeds are firing accurately.

The PhotoPlug is a small light-sensitive sensor that connects to your phone through the headphone jack. To test a shutter, open the camera back, point the camera towards a bright, non-flickering light source and position the PhotoPlug behind the shutter. When the shutter fires, the sensor detects the light pulse and the app measures the time between opening and closing.

Why We Like It

This is a really useful tool for anyone buying, testing or maintaining older film cameras. It is small enough to keep in your bag and makes it easy to check shutter speeds before committing a roll of film, especially when looking at second-hand cameras.

Ideal For

  • Testing analogue camera shutter speeds
  • Checking second-hand film cameras
  • Camera collectors and repairers
  • Film photographers troubleshooting exposure issues
  • Quick checks at home or in the field

Simple Smartphone Testing

The PhotoPlug works with the Shutter-Speed app, available for iOS and Android devices. The app shows a graph with one peak when the shutter opens and another when it closes, then calculates the shutter speed from the time between them.

Compact and Battery-Free

Measuring around 2cm long, the PhotoPlug is extremely portable and does not require batteries. It is easy to keep with your camera kit, ready for checking shutter speeds whenever needed.

Adapter Required

Please note that the PhotoPlug uses a headphone jack connection. If your phone does not have a headphone jack, you can use the official USB-to-jack adapters from Apple, Samsung or similar (sold separately). The adapter must support microphone input, as cheap audio-only adapters may not work with the PhotoPlug.

Key Features

  • Optical shutter-speed tester for analogue cameras
  • Works with the Shutter-Speed app for iOS and Android
  • Measures shutter speed using a light-sensitive sensor
  • Useful for checking vintage and second-hand film cameras

Sebastian P. ★★★★★

The app paired with the plug in under a minute, and I had my old Canon's shutter speeds measured on the first try—spot on compared to what I'd guessed. The whole setup is so compact it lives in my camera bag now, which beats hauling around a bulky tester.

Samuel K. ★★★★★

I was skeptical about using my phone to test a vintage camera, but plugging the PhotoPlug in and watching the app calculate shutter speeds in real time was genuinely satisfying. It nailed the 1/500th reading within a few percent of the marked speed.

Emma C. ★★★★★

Took it out of the box and within five minutes had my ancient Nikon's speeds checked against the free app—the optical sensor picked up even the slowest clicks without any fiddly setup. The compact size means it lives in my camera bag now, and I've already caught one off-speed leaf shutter that would
